You shall Not Commit Adultery

So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. - 2 Samuel 11:3-4

David, yielding to his flesh, sought to find out more information on the woman he saw bathing that evening. He wanted to satisfy sin.  He took no consideration that she was a married woman or the fact she was the wife of Uriah; one of his faithful soldiers. David was a man after God’s own heart, yet he ignored the Law of God: You shall not commit adultery (Exodus 20:14). Even the harsh consequences of adultery, death by stoning, did not deter David from following his sinful desires. Leviticus 20:10 tell us:

‘The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death.’

Despite all the warnings and knowing the consequences, David satisfied his lust and then sends Bathsheba on her way. Perhaps he thought his sin would remain a secret?

When you are tempted to sin, first stop and consider the terrible consequences. Imagine the shame, guilt and ruin of your good character. Think how adultery will destroy your family and damage your children. Ask yourself is it really worth it?

Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does so destroys his own soul. ~Proverbs 6:32~
