If at First You don’t Succeed

Then David said to Uriah, “Wait here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. Now when David called him, he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. And at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. -  2 Samuel 11:12-13

David failed in his first attempt to get Uriah home, so with renewed determination he attempted a second time. He manipulated him into staying in Jerusalem to eat and drink. If he could not coax him home sober then David thought to get him home drunk. He thought once he was intoxicated someone would have to help him home.

David had become very conniving and persistent in his attempts to cover up his sin. He looked for every way possible to make sure he succeeded, but his deceitful plans still failed. Uriah slept off his drunkenness by once again lying down with his men. Think about this situation, who is leading Uriah? It was the Lord who never allowed David to succeed in his willful sins.

It is important to learn that we too can never succeed in sin. Surrender to the Lord fully and completely, do not resist the Holy Spirit’s conviction, repent and come to the cross of Christ for forgiveness.

First John 1:9 instructs us:  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Sin is never an accident, it is always intentional.
