True Repentance
So David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” - 2 Samuel 12:13
Finally, David had come to grips with the magnitude of his sin and what he did against the Lord. Although his confession is brief and to the point here, in Psalm 51:1-4, David‘s heart is poured out before the LORD in true repentance:
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight—That You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge.
We should all take the time to slowly read through Psalm 51 today. You will then understand how broken David was before the LORD. When he repented, his relationship with God was restored fully and completely. He knew he had brought God‘s judgment on himself and that His judgment would be just.
David was a man after God’s own heart, yet he fell into sin––it can happen to any one of us. What we need to learn from David is how to fall on God’s mercy and be sincere in our repentance before the LORD. God forgives sin and cleanses the sinner (1 John 1:9).
Do not let Satan lie to you in thinking there is no way back to God. The way back to God is through the cross of Christ.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise.
