The US study, which looked at how 500 children interacted with their parents analyzed how they reacted when they were shouted at by both their mothers and fathers.
It showed that when fathers did shout at their offspring, their behavior towards other family members or strangers did not improve, and got worse.
While mothers who did exactly the same, had no impact on their children's behavior.
Now researchers warn that how fathers interact with their children when disciplining them, has links to aggressive and delinquent behavior in later life.
The study was carried out by researchers at Brigham Young University in Utah, and concluded that as shouting by fathers was louder and more forceful, it would be associated more with anger.
They added that this could make it seem like anger is a normal or acceptable way to behave.
The study's author Laura Padillo Walker told the Times: "Our message to dads is that it’s really important to be kind and gentle with older children — even gentler sometimes than mom."
"Forget traditional messages urging you to be the harsh disciplinarian. Forget ‘Wait till your father gets home’. Hostility from dad tends to produce negative outcomes."
"Fathers should reflect on parenting styles. In reality, their approaches may be more hostile than they realise or admit and may also be damaging to their children."
