A Christian Member of Parliament has admitted to having an affair with his assistant and apologized for his “completely inappropriate” behavior.

According to ChristianToday.com, evangelical MP for St. Austell and Newquay Steve Double, 49, told the Cornish Guardian that he had an affair with his 26-year-old married assistant, Sarah Bunt. Double is also a former pastor.

Double said the affair was short-lived, but that the pair met up more than once. "It wasn't a one-off but it was only a few weeks.”

Both Double and his wife, Anne, who also works in his office, say they want to save their marriage

"I'm not throwing away 30 years of marriage for the sake of a few hours," stated Anne Double, who has three children with her husband.

"Anne and I are committed to being together and seeking to move forward in our marriage,” said Steve Double."I accept I have work to do to recover the trust and respect of those around me. I would respectfully request that people give us the time and space we need at this time."

Of Ms. Bunt, Anne Double said, “She’s on leave. Put it that way.”

Double has made a name for himself in Parliament as an outspoken Christian and especially as a champion of family values.

"In my view many of the problems and challenges our country faces could be improved by supporting families and this is something I am committed to do,” he previously stated.
