President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly offered the position of education secretary in his new administration to Liberty University Chancellor, Jerry Falwell, Jr.
According to FoxNews.com, however, Falwell said he turned the position down due to personal reasons.
Falwell told the Associated Press that Trump offered him the job last week during a meeting in New York City.
Although an avid Trump supporter, Falwell decided to decline the offer because he did not want to leave Liberty for more than two years and the education secretary position would be a four to six year commitment.
Falwell added that another reason why he declined the position was because he did not want to move his family from Lynchburg, especially his 16-year-old daughter, Caroline.
Falwell has been a vocal Trump supporter since the presidential primaries, even when many evangelicals voiced their concerns over Trump’s morality.
Trump has spoken at Liberty University twice and Falwell and his wife, Becki, met with him at Trump Tower during his campaign.
After Falwell declined the position, Trump appointed charter school advocate Betsy DeVos for the job. Falwell said he thinks DeVos is an “excellent choice.”
