Psalm 1:1

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers.”

“Blessed”—that is how God wants your life to be!

God wants to bless you more than you can know, and this Psalm tells you how you can live your life in the path of God’s blessing.

This first verse tells us that there is one main thing you have to watch out for if you want your life to be full of God’s blessing. God’s message to you in this devotional today is to do whatever you can to avoid being shaped by the worldview of people who embrace a godless life. Love them, but be careful!

Don’t “walk in their counsel”. That is, don’t let them shape the way you think about life and what is important. Don’t let them set your value system! Our biggest exposure to the counsel of the wicked is the media. Do you watch TV shows that are so funny, but which subtly make you comfortable with sensuality and sin in your life? Let them go.

Don’t “stand in their way”. Don’t start down the path of accepting sin in your life. Don’t be influenced by the behaviour of sinful people around you. If you don’t guard yourself in these two things, soon you’ll find yourself “sitting in the seat of scoffers”
