Notice, once the people dispersed after hearing God’s Word, they went away greatly rejoicing. Why? Because they were helped by the priests to understand the Scriptures Ezra had read to them.
When people leave the church service after hearing God’s Word they should go out rejoicing––not sad. The pastor should expound the meaning of the Scriptures to the people. When they have gained a good understanding of God’s Word, they will leave rejoicing.
Jesus, in Galilee, had explained to His disciples about his death and crucifixion. He told them He would rise again on the third day (Matthew 16:21). But His disciples did not fully understand. After Jesus’ death and resurrection, in unbelief, two of Jesus’ disciples travelled on the road to Emmaus, discouraged (Luke 24:13-14).
Unrecognized, Christ joined the disciples on their journey. He asked them the reason for their sadness. Cleopas, surprised that the traveler had no clue to what had transpired over the past few days, explained about Jesus’ death. They thought Jesus would have redeemed Israel. Although told by the women of His resurrection, the Lord had not been seen by any of the other disciples (Luke 24:15-24). Then Jesus said to them:
“O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself (Luke 24:25-27).
If you are discouraged by a difficult circumstance, ask the Lord to open your understanding of the Scriptures and by His Spirit He will!
