Family Connections

Also in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them.  For many in Judah were pledged to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam  the son of Berechiah. - Nehemiah 6:17-18

Nehemiah’s enemies had failed to manipulate him to come outside the city. However, Tobiah continued to form friendships from within the city.  He was determined not lose touch with the people. He also married the daughter of Shechaniah, which gave him political ties with this Jewish leader. Through these compromising family connections, and other friendships, Tobiah persisted in bringing disorder within Jerusalem.

Parents in the church often compromise their position with their children. When their children become teenagers, they enter into a period of rebellion. Why? Our children have a little evil heart––like everybody else. Some may get into drinking, drugs, or fornication.  At that time you will need to make a persistent stand for godliness and holiness––if not, they will run your home and bring disorder into your families lives!

In our home, we taught our kids that if they lived at home they were expected to attend church twice a week. If they refused they had to leave and get their own job. Why? Then they could find out what real life is about. Even though they may think we are square and old fashioned, that is alright, because I would rather see them in heaven.

Seriously, teenagers are so naïve and gullible. They may choose to look at worldly magazines, enjoy the Hollywood scene, and watch adult shows on MTV, which can totally destroy their minds.  As parents and grandparents we have to fight against worldliness in the home. If we do not want to see them perish; we had better draw the lines––no compromise. I am not taking about legalism, or being harsh, because we need to love them. Use godly authority as you teach them God’s Word.

Children need to he trained, not just in the facts of life,
but in the ways of life.
