There was an article in the religion section of a local Dallas newspaper several years ago describing those who are spiritual, but not involved in organized religion. By that, they meant those who don’t accept organized religion or are not interested in the church. The word spiritual has been so tossed about that it means absolutely nothing in these days.
What does it mean to be spiritual? What does it mean to have a spiritual church? The fact is that God has given us an organized body called the church. Going to church or being a member doesn’t make you a Christian. But, when you become a follower and believer of Jesus Christ in your heart, soul, and life, your witness and testimony should be through the church. We are to faithfully and regularly fellowship with other Christians.
The world can be such a discouraging place. When you’re in your school, office, or even your own home, do you sometimes feel all alone attempting to live a life for Christ?
I came to Christ and was baptized in the fellowship of a little church in Arkansas. I cut my teeth on the back pew of that church. It was in that church that I first sensed the call of God on my life to preach the gospel. During my teenage years, I ran to my church to find friends and build relationships that would steady me and strengthen me in my desire to live for Christ.
It was in the church of Jesus Christ that I met the girl that would become my wife for over 30 years now, and it was in that place that we were married and stood at an altar and gave our lives to Christ and to each other. It was in the church of Jesus Christ that each of our three children had been dedicated to the Lord and into the service of Christ. It has been in the church that we’ve seen our family grow up strong, healthy, and vibrant in their faith. I have experienced some of the greatest moments of my life among the people of God—my church.
We’re not alone. Sometimes we ask: does anyone believe in the Bible or really pray? Does anyone in my community really share the faith that I have in Christ? The answer is yes! It is in the community and organized fellowship of believers known as the church. God has given us the church to strengthen our faith so that we may demonstrate love for one another, build up our families in godly living, and testify to the validity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Community Of Christ Cannot Be Broken.
