American Idol - WHO WILL MAKE IT...

AMERICAN IDOL - BROOKE BARRETTSMITH: Tonight the American Idol season kicked off... I was caught by a very pleasant surprise when I learned that my good friends Brooke and Leah Barrettsmith not only auditioned, not only made it on camera, not only got a featurette shot in their tiny Illinois town - but made it to Hollywood.
I have spent a significant amount of time with the Barrettsmiths. I've shared dinner in their home. My son and I have spent multiple weekends just "doing music" with the Barrettsmith family. I've shared a friendship with their family for years and have watched "the girls" as they are often referred to by Pastor Scott and Julie.
For what its worth, both girls are extremely gifted in terms of their vocal abilities. As a duo they have been performing for years. They have even produced a custom album, in which they wrote everything on it. The entire family is talented, Pastor Scott (their dad) was a talented drummer, and their two brothers are also gifted bass and drummer.
My Lovely Bride and I were sitting discussing which of the two will make it and how far... Simon immediately went for Leah, in fact Brooke nearly missed the cut. I have a personal prediction to make though... I think both may make it to Hollywood and survive through to the group rounds. But from my knowledge of the two - Brooke is the bigger student of her craft. She has written more of their songs, has at times seemed more committed to rehearsal, and as best as I can tell - has a greater sense of discipline.
That's not to say that Leah isn't talented - she is. You don't get Simon Cowell to sign off you right away unless you are. But talent alone may not go the distance, and the work ethic becomes key - and as well as I know her - there may be no harder working musician in America than Brooke.
In addition to all of this, Brooke is a committed Christian whose personal committment to Jesus Christ surpasses her love and drive for music. I will be hoping for her success.
And don't ask me how I got this list, but I have it on good authority that the American Idol finalist list looks like this...
