Well...we survived another year, and another Dove Awards, this year filled with glitter, hair spray, fireworks, and adulation. The biggest night of the year in Christian music took place Thursday night, April 20, 2000 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. We want to give you an opportunity to find out everything you'd like to know about the Doves, including info about what happened on-stage, as well as backstage at this year's show. Some television markets are broadcasting the show at various times over the Easter weekend - so if you want to keep the winners a surprise don't read our coverage. The official press release states that Steven Curtis Chapman went home with six Doves, although he only walked on stage four times, including Artist and Male Vocalist of the Year. His awards for Pop/Contemporary Album (==Speechless==) & Recorded Song ("Dive") - earned him two each as performer and producer of both. It was his newly adopted Chinese daughter who provided Chapman and his family the opportunity to promote adoption.
Michael W. Smith was the other big winner with Song of the Year ("This Is Your Time"), Songwriter of the Year, and Short-Form Video of the Year ("This Is Your Time"). Smith was gracious in thanking {{Wes King}} for writing the lyrics for "This Is Your Time."

The nominations for the 31st Annual Dove Awards were announced Wednesday January 26th at a press conference in Nashville.
A very visible shift toward an acceptance of rock, black gospel and Southern gospel artists was noticed with the strong showing of {{Fred Hammond}}, {{Kirk Franklin}}, {{Sixpence None The Richer}}, {{Third Day}}, {{Audio Adrenaline}} and {{The Cathedrals}}, alongside perennial Dove favorites {{Michael W. Smith}}, {{Steven Curtis Chapman}}, {{Point of Grace}} and {{Avalon}}. Just like last year's nominations, {{Michael W. Smith}} and {{dc Talk}}'s Toby McKeehan led the pack with the most nods. McKeehan's 10 came from his work as a songwriter and producer for {{Out of Eden}}, {{The Katinas}}, as well as {{dc Talk}}. Joining them is {{Steven Curtis Chapman}}, who garnered nine nominations.
Smith's eight mentions were mostly due to the huge success of his ==This Is Your Time== project, and including Songwriter and Male Vocalist of the Year.
His Cassie Bernall-inspired anthem is a clear front-runner for the Song of the Year award, although Avalon's "Can't Live A Day" stands a good chance, as well. Other artists receiving multiple nominations include {{Fred Hammond}} (7), {{Kirk Franklin}} (6), and {{Fernando Ortego}}, {{Avalon}}, and {{Point of Grace}} each with four.
