I think it's one of several possibilities. Certainly, the generation of male ancestors was considered extremely important in Israel and still is in the Middle Eastern societies to this day. The scripture referenced in the article was, in fact, the correct one. I think that one can not dismiss the posssibility that these women were also disciples of Jesus and that this was a terribly emotional event for them. To see one you consider the Messiah of God, and also one who treated you with uncommon kindness go through the torture Jesus endured, would certainly be a tremendously traumatic thing for them to go through. I do think that, most likely, the fact that Jesus never had children was probably not uppermost in their minds at this time. I would tend to believe that, seeing a beloved friend brutalized this way, would be the most common sense cause of thier tears.

First and foremost - the scripture reference is WRONG!! The title is what caught my attention and in reading it, I was not familiar with any reference to the women crying because Jesus was not leaving any offspring. I immediately got my bible to read the scripture and there is no Luke chapter 26!! It is actually found in Luke, chapter 23. I found the premise inferred in this article of the women wailing most interesting...
