Ghostbusters
Crowd
Plots about defeating the drug trade used to be a dime a dozen, and The Infiltrator hits all the familiar beats. But strong acting and several well-executed sequences make it an engaging, if uneven, drama with an edge and a satisfying conclusion.

Nope, it's not a superhero story and if you think the "fantastic" in the title means "great," think again. This odd, thought-provoking film is not for the squeamish, but certainly raises discussion on education, consumption and parenting.

Steven Spielberg returns to the director’s chair for his first children’s movie in five years with a surprisingly well-paced and heartfelt adaptation of Roald Dahl's book. The Big Friendly Giant) is sure to charm young and old alike with its winning protagonist, witty script, gorgeous visuals, and - of course - the gentle giant himself.

Succeeds Where Other Franchise Revivals Fail
Adventurous and ambitious if not altogether as rousing as the best summer blockbusters, The Legend of Tarzan revives a franchise for which no one seemed to be clamoring. But unlike John Carter or The Lone Ranger, this update is more often fun than not.

Free State of Jones
: Impactful While Imperfect
Based on true events, Free State of Jones is a unique Civil War-era story, showing how both sides of a war can be violent and oppressive. Structurally imperfect and a bit too meandering, the film still runs deep with sorrow, poignancy, important history, and the human spirit.

TMNT: Out of the Shadows
is One Headache from Start to Finish
The newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a bloated, obnoxious, mess of a movie, and it knows it. While the film tries to compensate by embracing its flaws with gusto, a few bright spots can’t stop the utter catastrophe which follows on screen. Overall, this sequel was better off in the dark.

Other than CGI, There's Not Much to See
Through the Looking Glass
Much like its Tim Burton-directed predecessor, this sequel is a sweeping CGI romp with tender moments, hijinks, and simplistic messages and morals. Earnest Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Sacha Baron Cohen as the Lord of Time are easy to root for, but the film still breaks no new cinematic ground.

is No Classic, but Good for a Few Laughs and APPlications
For a film born of a smartphone game, The Angry Birds Movie brings some surprisingly pleasant elements to the table. While not the next great leap in animation and not a film adults will want to see without the kids, it’s still got a clever-enough script and plenty of pop culture references to keep viewers engaged and even, at times, pensive.

is No Blast from the Past
The buddy cop genre of the '80s and '90s has not worn well. A story about a dead porn star, a missing girl and the "lovable lowlifes" forced to work together to find her makes The Nice Guys one of the more unpleasant viewing experiences of the year.

More Inspiring Than Infuriating
Doesn't make any pretense of sticking strictly to the synoptic Gospel narratives, but neither is it designed to throw unorthodox beliefs in the faces of its viewers. Rather, it's a gentle family drama centered around a strained father-son dynamic.

There's a Lesson for Us in
Captain America: Civil War
“I'm going, but I don't want to see 'my friends' fight," said my companion. The battles are epic and the quips keep coming, but this dark story opens a wound in Team Avengers that may never completely heal. By all means see it, but expect to come away a little heart-heavy.

Mother's Day
Regrettably Low on Substance
While certain subplots contain some heart, Mother's Day is largely shallow, low on relatable characters, lacking any kind of fresh and poignant take that might make (yet another) film about moms worth an hour-and-a-half at the movies.
