Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda Creating Live-Action Little Mermaid

With Disney in the midst of a live-action renaissance, longtime fans have been waiting for The Little Mermaid to become (ahem) “part of their world”. Well, the wait is finally over. According to reports on Deadline, Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame have been retained by Disney for a live-action adaption of the undersea tale. This announcement marks a series of projects Miranda has collaborated on with Disney, including a live action sequel to Mary Poppins starring Emily Blunt, and the upcoming animated feature Moana. With Universal Pictures working on their own version of the classic story starring Chloe Grace Mortez, it should be interesting to see how these two films ultimately stack up.

Currently, Disney has already released updates for Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Pete’s Dragon, with upcoming adaptions of Mulan and Beauty and the Beast set to arrive in 2017.
