Reviews for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice might have been less than super, but apparently even they couldn’t defeat the Dark Knight. According to Entertainment Weekly, Ben Affleck will reprise his role as the Caped Crusader in a standalone Batman film that will help expand the DC cinematic universe. What’s more, rumor has it the new movie will be directed by Affleck as well. EW writes,

“Onstage, Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara confirmed that Affleck is working on a solo Batman film and also appeared to confirm that Affleck is directing; while he didn’t explicitly state that Affleck is writing and directing the movie, Tsujihara listed the actor as one of the ‘filmmakers’ working on the expanded DC universe, along with Aquaman director James Wan.”

Affleck is already onboard to play Batman in the upcoming Justice League duology, and rumors have been flying about his participation in a new solo Batman film. Affleck himself told EW that the standalone Batman is ‘in development.’ And last month, his agency told the Hollywood Reporter, ‘There’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool idea’ for Batman. It’s possible that the solo Batman movie could take place before Batman v Superman, before Bruce Wayne went gray-ish. No word on the standalone Batman release date just yet.”

Though DC’s initial foray into movies has been fraught with disappointment, many fans have applauded Affleck for his portrayal of a seasoned, grisly Batman. This announcement also comes on the heels of two other upcoming project from Warner Bros; Suicide Squad andWonder Woman. The first stars a colorful ensemble of villains who’ve been drafted by a secret government agency, and is set to release in the fall of this year. The second, which will premier in 2017, features the iconic DC heroine as she journeys into the outside world for the first time. As of this moment, there is no release information for Affleck’s new Batman.
