Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns is one of the highest-profile sequels to be attempted in the last fifty years, but if the recent photos from Entertainment Weekly are anything to go by, the film already has plenty of wonder to spare. Set 25 years after the events of the original, Mary Poppins Returns sees the now adult Banks children enjoying life as successful, well-adjusted adults. However, after the sudden death of Michael’s wife, the Banks family falls into a dark period of sorrow which is only made worse by the threat of foreclosure on the family home. Thankfully, a familiar nanny is ready to float in and help the family recover their lost spirits.

The movie’s first photos showcase Mary Poppins (played here by Emily Blunt) leading the new generation of Banks children on wild adventures atop Big Ben and beyond. Along for the ride is a cheery lamplighter named Jack, played by Hamilton legend Lin-Manuel Miranda. A slew of other big names are expected to appear in minor roles throughout the film, including Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, and Dick Van Dyke (though not as the beloved Bert). All members of the movies production team have expressed their admiration for the original Mary Poppins and hope this new film will do justice to its legacy. For the rest of us, Mary Poppins Returns will arrive in theaters Christmas of 2018.
