Pixar Reveals First Details on Coco

It’s no secret that the Crosswalk editors are big fans of Pixar, so naturally we wouldn’t miss a chance to tell you about their upcoming new film, Coco. According to a recent article in Entertainment Weekly, Pixar’s next original movie will premiere sometime in November of 2017, not long after the release of Cars 3. Coco will allegedly take place in Mexico on Dia de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead), and focus on a young boy named Miguel. EW reports,

“Coco follows the secret musical ambitions of Miguel, who resides in a lively, loud Mexican village but comes from a family of shoemakers that may be the town’s only music-hating household. For generations, the Riveras have banned music because they believe they’ve been cursed by it; as their family history goes, Miguel’s great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife decades earlier to follow his own dreams of performing, leaving Imelda (Miguel’s great-great-grandmother) to take control as the matriarch of the now-thriving Rivera line and declare music dead to the family forever.”

“But Miguel harbors a secret desire to seize his musical moment, inspired by his favorite singer of all time, the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Bratt). It’s only after Miguel discovers an amazing link between himself and De la Cruz that he takes action to emulate the famous singer and, in doing so, accidentally enters the Land of the Dead.”

Currently, the film is set to star Benjamin Bratt (Dr. Strange) and Gael García Bernal alongside newcomer Anthony Gonzalez, who will voice the 12-year-old Miguel. Though there is currently no trailer for Coco, fans of Pixar were excited to learn the project would be headed by none other than longtime animation veterans Lee Unkrich, Darla K. Anderson, and co-director Adrian Molina. Coco will also make waves as Pixar’s first “musical” film, capitalizing on its central themes of performance and song. For now, all audiences can do is wait with anticipation for 2017 to arrive!
