The former host of the Colbert Report has never been shy when it came to speaking about his faith. As Relevant Magazine has pointed out before, Colbert (who is a devout Catholic) frequently breaks character when the conversation turns to religion. Whether it’s debating the cause of evil (warning: video contains strong language) or arguing for Christ’s divinity, this comedian takes his faith very seriously. Now, as he’s poised to take over as host for The Late Show, the conversation has once again turned toward God. In a recent profile for GQ magazine, Colbert was asked how the deaths of his father and brothers when he was young affected his life.

Colbert responded by pointing to his Catholic faith, and his belief that God is with us in our suffering,

I'm very grateful to be alive, even though I know a lot of dead people ... And so that act, that impulse to be grateful, wants an object. That object I call God. Now, that could be many things. I was raised in a Catholic tradition. I'll start there. That's my context for my existence, is that I am here to know God, love God, serve God, that we might be happy with each other in this world and with Him in the next—the catechism. That makes a lot of sense to me. I got that from my mom. And my dad. And my siblings.

Colbert also briefly mentioned how author J.R.R Tolkien portrayed death in his books, using The Lord of the Rings as a reference. While the rest of the interview covers topics such as comedy, career, and lifestyles, this brief dialogue holds a great deal of hope for struggling Christians. It reminds us that God is ever-present in our lives. It shows us that he is still working through believers in every facet of society, but most of all, as Colbert himself can attest to, He takes joy in our existence and wishes us to do the same.
