Aladdin appears to be the next live-action remake on Disney’s dream list, and based on reports from Variety and Relevant Magazine, the studio is already dipping into its stash of wishes. Both sources indicate that Will Smith is in talks to voice the iconic Genie, a character who was first brought to life in 1992 by the phenomenal voice-acting of Robin Williams. Variety noted that Smith had been circling a role in the upcoming remake of Dumbo, but walked away due to scheduling conflicts. As for the rest of the characters, Disney has revealed it intends to cast newcomers for the roles of Aladdin and Jasmine.

The original movie was the highest-grossing film of its year, and won Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Original Song. Given the massive success of remakes such as Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and most recently, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin stands poised to become the studios next major hit. Though a release date has yet to be announced, it’s possible the film will debut late in 2018.
