Abortion Supporters Chant 'Hail Satan,' Denounced by Actual Satanists

Last week, pro-abortion protesters at the Texas Capitol shouted "Hail Satan!" in an attempt to drown out pro-lifers singing "Amazing Grace." Later, the United Kingdom's Church of Satan tweeted that it was "unfortunate to see Satan's name used in such a diabolical manner. Another example of what 'Satanism' doesn't represent." They later added: "Why wouldn't Satanism be pro-life? What else is there? We are all free to make choices. Agreeable or not. Everyone is entitled to choice."

Joe Carter of the Gospel Coalition writes: "It's doubtful either the abortion supporters chanting 'Hail Satan!' or the Satanists denouncing them believe in the reality of the Evil One. They think the abortion issue is about them, and their choices. But they're wrong: abortion is about God." Carter quotes John Piper, who says the ultimate evil of abortion "is that it assaults and demeans God." But, Piper says, that "is what the gospel of Jesus Christ is about. How God planned and brought about a plan to forgive people who have committed the ultimate outrage of discounting His glory and treating it as less valuable than their own private preferences." When talking about the issue of abortion, "the most important things to say ... are how it relates to God and how God relates to it."

In a column on ReligionToday.com, Eric Metaxas of BreakPoint echoes the fact that the abortion issue all comes down to worldview. He writes: "Those who run abortion mills believe that inconvenient babies are disposable, and that it's perfectly acceptable to deceive vulnerable women in the interest of making money. But Christianity teaches that all women should be treated with respect and dignity, and that all babies, born and unborn, have great value because they are made in the image of God." Metaxas says the refusal to tell women the truth about fetal development and fetal pain goes back to the very beginning of legalized abortion, and says we shoul work to ensure that the women in our lives understand the reality.
