I am pleased to announce that LibriVox has just released the first-ever audio version of J. C. Ryle’s Expository Thoughts on Matthew. LibriVox makes free recordings of books in the public domain. In this particular case, the Ryle recordings were made by KBM board member MaryAnn Spiegel. The Matthew recordings encompass 15 hours of recording in 94 different sections.

I am big fan of J. C. Ryle, the British Anglican leader of the late 1800s. He had an amazing ability to take a few verses, find the key points of truth, and then state them in a way aimed at personal application. While not a technical commentary, Ryle’s “expository thoughts” arise from the text itself.

I believe if you had Ryle’s comments and nothing else but the Bible, you could do a fine job of preaching through Matthew. Ryle wrote with three purposes in mind:

1. Promoting spiritual growth
2. Extending the knowledge of Christ
3. Winning the lost to Christ

He admirably succeeds in this volume on Matthew. One can only hope that the remaining volumes covering Mark, Luke and John will eventually be added to the LibriVox library.

If you would like to read the eBook edition, you can order it in two different versions:
