Last night I received a phone call from my friend Peter Odanga, who serves on staff with Word of Life Kenya. I first met Peter about five years ago at the Word of Life Campground in New York. Since then he has married and moved back to his native Kenya. He and his wife Juddy were the States for a few weeks, and Marlene and I hoped to see them when we were in New York last weekend, but it didn’t work out. So he called to say hello because they were flying back to Kenya today.

In the course of the conversation I said that we would love to come to Kenya someday to see the work there. We both agreed to pray about God’s timing and the finances, and then he said, “God has put it on my heart lately that souls are expensive.”

I don’t think I’ve ever heard it put that way.

“The souls of men cost the Father the death of his only Son. If souls mean that much to the Father, then whatever we need to reach those souls, the Father will also supply.”

Souls are expensive. They cost the Father his Son.

“If a missionary goes to a hard land and labors there and after five years has only one convert for his labors, we may know that he has done the Father’s will because souls are expensive.”

The Father has paid the price in the blood of his Son.

If we are going to reach others for Christ, it will cost us something too. Souls are expensive.

Are we willing to do our part?
