In the Face of Evil, Remember Christmas

A word to those who are tempted to set aside their celebration of Christmas as they mourn over the Connecticut shootings:

Let your mourning be brief. Celebrate Christmas! Take joy and find hope in the midst of heartache and find peace and solace in the face of this evil!

Remember that the Christmas story starts in a very similar way as did last Friday at Sandy Hook elementary school.

Remember that our contemporary nativity scenes are missing something: Herod and his soldiers should be standing there along with the wise men and their camels and the shepherds and their sheep.

Remember that the whole Christmas story begins with the sound of mothers and fathers wailing at the loss of their babies at the hands of this madman.

Remember that murderers are lurking about right next to Mary and Joseph and the newborn Son of God.

Remember that over 2000 years ago man's rebellion and God's incarnation stood quietly together, in juxtaposition, elbow to elbow, illuminated by the Christmas star in a small, dirty, and devastated country town called Bethlehem.

Remember that, if this story tells us anything, it tells us that the only way to makes sense of such evil is to humble ourselves and kneel at the manger of God's grace and redemption!

Remember that Christmas means Emanuel - The Son of God is with us!

Remember only He can bring the peace in the midst of such a broken culture and hurting world!

Remember: For unto you a savior is born – Christ the Lord, the newborn King!

Remember, as C.S. Lewis tells us, “He has broken through at last, and [evil’s] magic is weakening!”

Joy to the World the Lord has come!

Merry Christmas!
