Answer the why question

Answer the “why” question.

Thought- It’s not just what, how and where we are doing something that matters, it also the why.

Scripture: “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15

Insight: I have noticed in my life that when I am fully committed to the “why” of what I am doing, the results tend to be much greater. That is a question that everyone should be asking themselves in all corners of their life. Why am I doing this? Why am I in this job, this relationship, this mental state, this predicament? If you can’t fully understand the “why” then the what, how and where don’t really matter that much. The “why” in my life has been drastically changed since I first encountered the Living God in Jesus Christ about 18 years ago.

Until that time, most of the “why’s” in my life centered around me seeking affirmation, making money, creating an image, and being successful in the world’s eyes. That led ultimately to emptiness, but it also led to a pondering of a bigger “why.” Why am I here, and why do I feel so empty despite having so much? In a way, these internal grapples with the biggest “why” questions are what ultimately led me to the Lord. Because once I was completely honest with myself and was willing to be vulnerable for maybe the first time in my life, then I was in a position to find the answers I had been seeking all along. When Jesus became the capital “WHY” in my life, everything began to change. The alignment of purpose and God given gifts began to create abundance and I could rest easy in the fact that with Jesus as the “WHY” the what, how and where could be almost anything. The freedom found in that thought is life-altering. Jesus died for our sins, so we could be set free from our guilt and shame, and so when we live with the deep gratitude for what Jesus has done, we can get to work on helping and loving others. Why? Because that is what Jesus commanded us to do: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

Prayer: Father God, thank you that through your Son Jesus, we are able to understand and answer the most important question in our life, why we do what we do. It is because of His great love for us that we are able to freely love others and there is no bigger “why” in this world than that.
