Desperation

Thought- Have you reached the point of desperation where you simply cry out “Lord, if you are real, please help me?”

Scripture- “Lord, you are the God who saves me; day and night I cry out to you. May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.” -Psalm 88:1-2

Insight: I heard a story today on the radio about a man who was battling for years a dependency on drugs and alcohol. It had robbed him of his life to the point where he had little hope left. He had decided to commit suicide by jumping out of his 3rd floor window. But right before he did, he remembered his sister telling him for all of his struggles, he still had a God who loved him, would forgive him and redeem him in Jesus Christ. So, in total desperation he cried out, Lord, if you are real, please help me! He then described how he got a warm feeling all over his body and felt a peace like never before. Fast forward four years, and he has been free of drugs and alcohol since that day and now works in a church. Such is the great power and love of the Lord for those who seek Him. Matthew 7:7 promises what this man found out:“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Can you imagine how awful it would be for that man if he hadn’t cried out in desperation and been saved by Jesus right before taking his own life? He would have been eternally separated from God and the enemy would have claimed another soul. That is the nature of the battle we are in on this earth.

I had a similar experience, although not as dramatic in my conversion experience as this man. I was lost, unfulfilled and angry even though I had many things the world said should make me happy. I had never been able to forgive my father for leaving when I was age 12, used alcohol and marijuana on daily basis to anesthetize my pain, and felt no real worth deep in my soul. God changed all that in a moment when I also cried out to Him. Sometimes, it takes a desperate soul to remove all the invisible barriers that separate us from realizing how much we need our Savior Jesus. There are many things in this world that can cause us to be desperate, most notably the nature of living in a fallen world infected by sin that is permeating every aspect of life right now. Have you come to the end of your rope? Cry out to the Lord and ask Him to respond. His word promises He will, and your life and eternal destiny will be forever changed.

Prayer- Father God, help all of those who are feeling desperate today to reach out to you in their desperation so they can be saved and given new life through your resurrected Son Jesus. I pray this in His holy name. Amen!
