Christians at the Intersection of Faith and Laws

What would you do if you were asked to compromise your religious convictions?

For an increasing number of believers in this country, that’s not a hypothetical question anymore. It’s a real-life decision they’re having to make – and the cost for standing for their faith can be high.

Christian business owners who are trying to run their companies according to their biblical beliefs are finding themselves increasingly at odds with our country’s laws and “erotic freedom.” That’s why in today’s broadcast, we’re exploring the challenges to our religious liberties.

During our broadcast, we talk with Aaron and Melissa Klein, a couple who recently made national headlines with their cake shop in Gresham, Oregon. The Kleins refuse to create cakes that compomise their religious convictions, like so-called divorce cakes. That’s why when a lesbian woman came in to have the shop prepare a cake for her same-sex "wedding," the owners politely declined her business.

The Kleins’ decision to run their shop according to their biblical faith led to a state investigation, LGBT-led pledges to boycott any other vendor that does business with “Sweet Cakes By Melissa,” and the painful decision for the couple to shut down the enterprise they took years to build.

We’ll also talk with constitutional lawyer and George Mason University law professor Dr. Helen Alvare. She specializes in how law impacts religion and family. Finally, Jordan Lorence, a senior attorney for Alliance Defending Freedom, will talk about the Elaine Photography case out of New Mexico. These two lawyers will help us understand the trends, the laws – and what’s at risk.
