Judy Moody’s Colorful, Crazy Summer

Opening wide in theaters this Friday, June 10, 2011, Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer is not only wholesome entertainment for the entire family, it’s eye-and-ear candy o’ plenty for young moviegoers who love colorful costuming and sets, kooky characters and dialogue and crazy hijinks and unbelievable situations.

“Okay, so like what?” you may wonder. I’m so glad you asked …

  • Judy’s ukulele-playing third-grade teacher just happens to be someone who starred as a very familiar, annoying, and sometimes loveable character in a popular TV sitcom back in the ‘90s. His voice, and his suspenders, always preceded him. Think about it.
  • Kid lingo, in Judy’s world, includes invented words or acronyms for EVERYTHING.  Such as, “supercalifragilisitic-expithrilladellic.” Or FYEO which stands for “for your eyes only.” Or “Frank, my-used-to-be-second-best-friend-but-now-he’s-my-enemy.” Ahhh, fun with words. And youth.
  •  Can’t see the downstairs TV from your upstairs bedroom after you planned to sulk and spend the whole summer in your room, since it’s not going according to your plans? No problem! Just rig a periscope of sorts so you can still watch all your favorite shows. Hey, that’s not such a bad idea …
  • Being sawed in half isn’t nearly as bad as it sounds. Especially if your best friend Rocky has been recently trained to do so at circus camp and now wants to demonstrate on YOU in front of a live, under-a-big-tent audience. Fun!
  • If it walks like a Bigfoot and talks like a Bigfoot, it must be a Bigfoot, right? Also add in if it rides in an ice cream truck and you’re chasing it in a van along with other members of the “Bigfoot Believers Association” as well. ‘Cause that could be really important, too. Especially when you get to the end of the movie and find out who’s really been driving that ice cream truck all summer long. No way!

Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer is based on the beloved, best-selling children's book series by Megan McDonald who also serves as screenwriter for this film. Read what she has to say about the movie—in addition to some summertime advice from child actors Jordana Beatty (Judy) and Parris Mosteller (Stink)—in my interview here.
