It May Be Autumn, but It’s Time for Winter

Hooked you with that blog title today, didn’t I?

But I must give credit for my inspiration to two different things: Autumn begins today and the much-anticipated family film Dolphin Tale is releasing in theaters.

Um, okay  . . . so what does that have to do with Winter?

Everything! Winter is the star of Dolphin Tale. That’s right, as in appearing as herself in the new inspirational movie that’s based on her true story.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, then you know I talked about Winter earlier this year after visiting the film set as production was wrapping up on location in Clearwater, Florida. It’s the actual locale where the then three-month-old dolphin was rehabbed at Clearwater Marine Aquarium after being discovered caught in a crab trap in Mosquito Lagoon in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

The film is based on the true story of her recovery (she lost her tail due to severe injuries and now miraculously swims with a prosthetic tail) and then a heartwarming backstory was added by filmmakers to bring Winter to life on the big screen.

I spoke with director Charles Martin Smith about the making of Dolphin Tale earlier this week, as he shed some light on the thought process behind it all. It’s a sweet family film that affirms life and will put a smile on your face (and . . . gulp . . . even a tear in your eye). Plus, if you’re a critter ‘n’ creature lover like me, then there’s no thinking involved. Just go.

But . . .

If you aren’t able to celebrate Winter on this first weekend of autumn, then let me suggest to you some fine family programming on ABC Television. The ninth season of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is premiering on this Sunday night, September 25, at 7/6 c.

I talked with EMHE’s carpenter/designer Paige Hemmis recently about what to expect on the first episode (and the rest of the season for that matter). She also shared about her faith and why she’s still thrilled to be a part of this special reality television series that’s radically changing homes and lives.

So, either way: Dolphin Tale or Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. You can’t go wrong this weekend as both have strong messages of giving help and hope to others. And besides the cooler temps, that’s something that should inspire us all in the days ahead.
