What to Pack for the Tomb

I love seeing which story makes it to the Featured Box on Yahoo! each day.

Usually there's something of interest. Like today's top featured story: "Belgians Find Tomb of Ancient Egypt Courtier."

Seems that a team of archaeologists stumbled upon this tomb while excavating another burial site somewhere near Cairo. Henu is this particular mummy's name, and he was an estate manager and a high-ranking official during the first intermediate period (2181-2050 BC).

With Henu were found several different objects: statuettes of workers making bricks, women making beer and pounding cereal and a model of a boat with rowers. There were also messages addressed to the gods Anubis and Osiris.

Now, I don't know if Henu got a say in what was packed in his tomb or if it was just decided on by his family members after his demise. Regardless, the discovery of his tomb and its contents got me to thinking:  If the same burial customs were in effect today, what types of objects and or messages would I be buried with? Or what would I want to be found with me when someone discovered my tomb?

Taking this even further, it really boils down to what type of legacy I want to leave here on earth. Everything is going to turn to dust anyway. But how would I like for friends and family to remember me? What am I devoted to NOW that will make a lasting difference when I'm gone?

Well, if you take a look at my checkbook or my calendar, you might suggest I include messages to the ... gulp ... gods of DSW and HGTV (aka Designer Shoe Warehouse and Home & Garden Television). I suppose I should also add in some words for the lesser cosmic entities, too, like "men" and "career" ... 'cause they're both getting a lot of focus from my mental faculties and emotional energies these days.

In choosing objects for my tomb, I should probably consider adding in statuettes of my cats, my house, my family and me singing a little "do-re-mi" (with proper posture and mouth formation, of course).

All of these are fine and good. And not too heinous. But they don't really have eternal impact.

So, keeping in mind how Scripture advises me to live, what should I really be "buried" with? How about these, for starters:  messages of my love and devotion and worship to the one true God, statuettes of me trusting Him, helping others, reading the Word, praying, praising, encouraging, loving and demonstrating all the fruits of the Spirit.

I could go on. But this is definitely a good place to start when deciding what to pack for the tomb.
