Teens Use YouTube, Gmail More Than Social Networks

Despite the huge popularity of social networking among teens, more respondents reported using Gmail than Snapchat or Facebook, June 2016 research uncovered. The only site used more than Gmail was YouTube, which is not surprising given the plethora of content and influencers available on the video-sharing site.

The National Cyber Security Alliance and Microsoft polled 804 US teen internet users ages 13 to 17 about their digital activities. By far, YouTube was the most popular site on the list—more than nine in 10 teens surveyed said they used the video-sharing site.

Other research confirms YouTube’s popularity among younger internet users: YouTube stars have a much bigger influence on purchase intent among teens than TV or movie stars.

Interestingly, Gmail ranked second on the list. Indeed, three-quarters of teens said they used the email app. To compare, more teens said they used Gmail than social sites and apps including Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. Even Kik, a messaging app that is popular among this demographic, didn’t rank as high as Gmail.

Nonetheless, teens are active social media users. This year, 17.5 million social network users between the ages of 12 and 17 will use a social network at least once per month, eMarketer estimates. And by 2020, that number will grow to 18.2 million.
