Television Audience Is Getting Older

According to new findings by Michael Nathanson of Moffett Nathanson Research, the age of the average television viewer is getting older.

The findings are not surprising given that young audiences are increasingly consuming their entertainment, including television programming, through online delivery systems such as Netflix and YouTube.

Nathanson found the median age of viewership for cable and broadcast programming during the 2013-2014 television season was 44.4, an increase of 6 percent over four years. The age of viewers for major broadcast network programming increased even more, to a median of 53.9, an increase of 7 percent over four years. CBS has the oldest viewers, averaging 58.7 years of age.
