A 5-year-old is making headlines after he stopped to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and to pray, even though he was late for school.

According to The Blaze, Royce’s mom dropped him off in front of his school for his first day of Kindergarten while she went to find a place to park.

When she came back, she noticed Royce had stopped walking into the school with the other kids and was bowing his head.

“I was about four cars back, so I just saw him standing there with what looked like him just looking at his shoes,” Royce's mom, Heather Nelson, told WDAF-TV. “But that did not seem like Royce.”

A police officer who was standing near Royce explained to his mom that when the Pledge of Allegiance came on, the boy had stopped where he was, and had afterward bowed his head in silent prayer.

“Mom, he’s doing good, he stopped for the Pledge of Allegiance,” Nelson recalls the officer saying.

“I was so proud that he stopped when the Pledge of Allegiance came and stood his ground and did not move as the other kids were going in and then took time out and prayed and did not even care or think twice about it,” Nelson wrote in a Facebook post that quickly went viral. “This is such a beautiful picture.”

Many responded to the photo and story.

“Good job, Heather, for instilling what is important to your children and them showing the respect this country & God deserves,” one commenter wrote.

Nelson, as well as other members of Royce’s family, have said they are very proud of him.
