A Congressman who supported pro-life legislation allegedly asked his mistress to get an abortion, reports ABC News.

Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), 65, was one of the members of Congress who sponsored the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which passed in the House 237-189 on Tuesday. The bill would ban abortion after 20 weeks. Murphy has also supported other pro-life measures.

Despite championing this bill, however, Murphy reportedly asked Shannon Edwards, 32, with whom he was having an extramarital affair, to undergo an abortion when the couple had a pregnancy scare.

Edwards messaged Murphy after an anti-abortion statement was posted to the Congressman’s Facebook page.

"And you have zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options," Edwards allegedly wrote in a text message to Murphy, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Murphy reportedly answered Edwards: “I get what you say about my March for life messages. I've never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don't write any more. I will."

Although the pregnancy scare turned out to be unfounded and Edwards did not get an abortion, many are decrying Murphy’s apparent hypocrisy.

ABC News reports that both Murphy’s office and Edwards declined to comment.
