Boko Haram militants killed over 100 people as they burned the village of Damboa in a horrific act of violence and terrorism. Residents who escaped the burning structures were gunned downed by militants.

“Those who could not flee surrendered and were killed by the insurgents,” a local official said.

The militants raised their flag over Damboa to demonstrate their defeat; the village lies 53 miles south of the capital city of Maiduguri.

According to surviving witnesses, the militants carried bombs and grenades, and destroyed nearly every standing building. The citizens of Damoa only had homemade guns and clubs for defense.

Only two weeks ago, Damboa’s military barracks were attacked, killing several soldiers reports Christian Today. Though the soldiers counter-attacked and killed over 50 Boko Haram members, the soldiers left the village, along with police.

“We were defenseless because all the security personnel, including soldiers and policemen, have withdrawn,” said resident Ahmed Buba.
