At least 80 people are dead and hundreds are wounded after a deadly bombing in Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul.

According to USA Today, the Islamic State has taken responsibility for the blast which occurred outside the German Embassy in the busy, central part of Kabul.

The bomb was reportedly hidden in a sewage tanker and when it detonated, the surrounding area was thrown into chaos.

“The blast shook my taxi. At first, I thought Kabul has been hit by an earthquake,” said a witness to the blast, taxi driver Mohammad Yasin. “But the chaos and screams that followed suggested something more sinister. When the smoke cleared, I saw body parts and charred bodies strewn all over the road. Some of the survivors were running for help, covered in their bloodied clothes while those who could not move were screaming for help," he added.

"I had just opened the shop and was settling down with three of my employees when there was a bang. A huge bang. It felt like a thunder. The glass on the shop's windows broke, there was fire and dust everywhere,” testified another local, Masood Toarozai, who owns a tailoring shop in the area.

It is currently the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, when the Islamic State and other terrorist groups have historically increased their attacks.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack, stating, "the terrorists, even in the holy month of Ramadan, the month of goodness, blessing and prayer, are not stopping the killing of our innocent people.”

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul, as well as the head of NATO, also condemned the attack.
