Catholic Church Releases Sexual Abuse Report

A report from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says that the Catholic Church spent about $3 billion for allegations of sexual abuse.

The money was used for settlements, therapy and attorney fees, according to the report, which was released Friday. The audit is part of an effort in the Church to increase transparency about sexual abuse in the church. The data in the report, collected by StoneBridge Business Partners, ranges from 127 dioceses from July 2012 to June 30, 2013.

“This report is part of a pledge we have made to remain accountable and vigilant,” said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops. Behind the data contained in the report are men and women, adults and children, in need of our prayers and support. As we continue to create a climate of safety for all minors entrusted to the Church's pastoral care, our three-fold pledge guides us: to help victims heal; to educate about and prevent abuse; and to hold accountable those who have harmed children. These remain essential priorities for our Church.”

According to the report:

• There were 936 allegations of sexual abuse reported in the date range.

• 136 allegations were proved to be substantiated by evidence.

• Nearly 30 percent of those accused are dead.

• 80 percent of victims were male.

• 40 percent were between the ages of 10 and 14.
