Christian Cakeshop Owner on 'The View': ‘I’m Just Trying to Preserve My Right as an Artist’

Jack Phillips, the Christian owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Colorado, was recently a guest on “The View” where he answered questions regarding his decision not to make a cake for a gay wedding.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear Phillips’ case in Masterpiece v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

Previously, Phillips lost his case with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, as well as his appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear his decision, Phillips says he and his family have received death threats.

While on “The View,” Phillips and his attorney Kristen Waggoner, were questioned on his decision not to bake the cake for the gay couple as the discussion went back and forth between LGBT rights and religious freedom.

“It’s a difficult thing to be in my position and know that somebody’s requesting me to do something that I can’t in good conscience do,” Phillips said. “I believe that the Bible clearly teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman.”

He added that the gay couple--and anyone else--is always welcome in his store and that he would make them another item besides a wedding cake. He said that he also declines to make cakes for Halloween or for events that are disparaging to others.

When co-host Sara Haines brought up that in addition to condemning homosexuality, the Bible says “Don’t judge others” and “Love thy neighbor,” Phillips responded, “I’m not judging these two gay men that came in. I’m just trying to preserve my right as an artist to decide which artistic endeavors I’m going to do and which ones I’m not.”

Phillips was also asked if he thought Jesus would have made the cake for the couple, to which he replied that he did not believe He would since He would not contradict His own teachings.

Co-host Joy Behar then jumped in and said, “Oh come on, Jesus would have made the cake. That’s a deal breaker. Jesus is going to make the cake.”

The Supreme Court will hear Phillips’ case in its fall term.
