Christian Charities Urge U.K. Government Not to Cut Disability Benefits

A number of Christian charities are criticizing the U.K. government for planned changes to disability benefits which changes the charities say would hurt up to 600,000 people who rely on disability benefits.
Christian Today reports that the Disability Benefits Consortium (DBC) which includes a number of Christian charities, said that the government’s proposed plans will “damage the health and wellbeing” of thousands of people with disabilities.
The government wants to change the way disabled people are assessed for benefits as part of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) plan.
The DBC maintains that the changes to this plan would have a “severe impact on individuals’ financial security making it harder to access opportunities to work and participate in society.”
"In the worst cases, individuals could lose up to £120-£150 per week," said the letter from the DBC.
Tanya Marlow, founder of Compassionate Britain, urged all Christians to oppose the changes.
"In 2010, David Cameron promised compassion, and yet he keeps targeting cuts at the most vulnerable in our society," she told Christian Today, adding that the original PIP helps to “level the playing field” for those with disabilities.
