A new survey revealed that more evangelical Christians named Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, as the top world leader than any other leader.

Christian Today reports that research by the Washington-based Brookings Institution revealed that 16 percent of evangelical Christians said Netanyahu was the top world leader. Eleven percent named Ronald Reagan, and 10 percent named Barack Obama.

The research was also sharply divided between Democrats and Republicans, with only one percent of Democrat voters naming Netanyahu as the top world leader.

“While Republicans overall have much more favourable views of Netanyahu than unfavourable ones, Democrats have a more unfavorable view of the Israeli leader by a ratio of about two to one. In general, older Americans admire the Israeli leader far more than the younger ones,” the research stated.

Netanyahu is known for his hardline policies in defense of Israel. The U.S. presidential election is coming up, and Christian Today reports that a candidate’s support of Israel will be at least a somewhat important issue for voters.

The survey also showed that 45 percent of Christians believe the Jews are God’s chosen people, while 49 percent do not believe they are God’s chosen people.
