More than 80 people were killed and another 200 were wounded in explosions Monday (May 23) in Syria.

According to, the Islamic State has already claimed responsibility for the blasts in the two peaceful pro-government cities of Tartus and Jableh.

At least one suicide bomber and a car packed with explosives rammed into a bus station in Tartus. Then in Jableh, three rockets and a suicide bomber at a national hospital hit the city.

“We will not be deterred … we will use everything we have to fight the terrorists,” said Syrian Cabinet Minister Omran al-Zoubi on Syrian TV.

The cities are home to thousands of displaced refugees. After the attacks, residents of the cities and families of the victims attacked the shelters housing the refugees. Reportedly, one shelter was burned down.

Meanwhile, an Islamic State spokesman is encouraging supporters in Europe and the United States to launch attacks on civilians if they cannot travel to Iraq and Syria.

Abu Mohammed al-Adnani tells his supporters in a 31-minute message released this weekend that “the tiniest action you do in the heart of their land is dearer to us than the biggest action by us.”

He adds that “there are no innocents in the heart of the lands of the Crusaders.”

He told supporters to start attacks during Ramadan, which begins next month.
