A Catholic church in Israel will be compensated for damages suffered from a Jewish-led arson attack.

According to CBNNews.com, Israel’s Attorney General, Yehuda Weinstein, reversed a previous decision by the nation’s tax authority not to compensate the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes for the extensive damage it incurred after Jewish youths set fire to the roof and vandalised the interior.

The damages were estimated at just under $2 million.

Initially, the Israeli tax authority decided not to compensate the church because the arson was committed by Jews against Christians and thus did not fall under the Israeli law that states reparation will be paid only for damages incurred in an Israeli-Arab conflict.

Weinstein decided to reverse the decision, stating that the attack was "ideologically based within the Israel-Arab conflict,"

Father Matthias of the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes stated, "From the start we were told we would be compensated. We were surprised when they decided not to compensate. It's heartening they changed their mind."
