Christian college Liberty University is reportedly building a large shooting range on campus that will cost at least $1 million.

RelevantMagazine.com reports that Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. recently spoke with The Washington Post and stated, “Liberty will be the first university to have nationally recognized ranges that meet NRA and NCAA guideline standards and be able to host all Olympic shooting sports on its central campus property.”

Falwell also acknowledged that building such a facility on the campus will likely be controversial. He admitted he was “a little timid about telling parents about it because I thought some would be worried."

Falwell is known for being a strong supporter of gun rights. In a speech during the college’s school-wide, thrice-weekly gathering, known as Convocation, Falwell encouraged more students to get concealed carry permits. Falwell said he believes if more responsible citizens owned guns, tragic shootings are less likely to cause the devastation they often do.

Last year, Falwell made waves when he referenced the San Bernardino shooting and said that “I’ve always thought that if more good people had concealed-carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in … and killed them.”

He went on to say that if more students had concealed carry permits they could “teach them a lesson if they ever show up here.”

Liberty has been experiencing astounding growth in the last few years. A state-of-the-art library, new dorms, and a new concert hall have preceded the shooting range as new additions to the campus.
