President Donald Trump’s national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned Monday night amid a controversy concerning his talks with Russia.

According to FoxNews.com, Flynn admitted that he had “inadvertently” misinformed top U.S. officials regarding his talks with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. The Trump administration had been told Flynn did not discuss sanctions with the Russian ambassador, but this was was reportedly not the entire truth.

At the time, when White House press secretary Sean Spicer was asked if Flynn discussed sanctions with Russia, he replied, “No, absolutely not.”

When it became known that Flynn had not accurately or fully communicated the substance of his discussion with the Russian ambassador, Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway stated, “In the end it really was the misleading or the forgetfulness about the characterizing of that conversation that was the lynchpin here.”

In his letter of resignation, Flynn wrote that "I have sincerely apologized to the president and the vice president, and they have accepted my apology.”

CNN.com reports that possible replacements for Flynn are Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, retired Gen. David Petraeus, and former Vice Admiral Bob Harward.

Trump, who is known as being very active on Twitter, has not commented on Flynn’s resignation or the controversy over talks with Russia via his social media account.
