National Sanctity of Human Life Day

The Month of January holds a lot of meaning for the people at Bethany Christian Services. Located in Grand Rapids, MI, the Christian organization recognizes January as National Sanctity of Human Life month, and uses it as an opportunity to shed light on the realities of abortion. In 2010, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimate there were 765,651 reported abortions in the Untied States alone. Bethany Christian Services believes that as the public becomes increasingly familiar with the idea of abortion, younger individuals have begun to view it as an easy convenience. Julie Oosterhouse of Mission Network News writes,

“As easier and less involved ways to participate in abortion are made available, people who might not have favored abortion previously are opting for the ‘morning after pill’ and similar post-encounter ‘birth control.’ This is dangerous. Minors find these practices much more accessible. And the issue doesn’t stop in the secular arena. Christians are threatened by the lies of abortion just like anyone else.”

Oosterhouse also took a moment to interview Bethany representative Bill Blacquiere, who elaborated on the feelings of loss and failure many woman feel post abortion. This push could signify new hope for pro-life advocates, who in recent months have seen a flurry of activity in Congress and the Courts. The House itself recently passed a bill which banned the funding of abortions through taxpayer dollars, and the Supreme Court is in the process of reevaluating the buffer zones set for protesters around abortion clinics. Many at Bethany see these events as opportunities to spread more awareness of National Sanctity of Human Life month.
