Thirty-five people died in a suspected Boko Haram attack on the northeastern village of Gumsuri. The militants also kidnapped at least 100 women and children.

The attack occurred on Sunday (Dec. 14). The BBC reports that it took several days for the news of the attack to break internationally because survivors of the incident fled to the city of Maiduguri to spread the news.

Maina Chibok, who visited family in Gumsuri following the attack said that the terrorists stormed the village in pickup trucks and opened fire.

"They gathered the people, shot dead over 30 people and took away more than 100 women and children in two open-top trucks," he told Reuters

Chibok said that the suspected Boko Haram members also burned buildings, including a medical center, shops and homes.
