North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory faces a federal government deadline today (May 9) to change his views regarding the state’s recently passed transgender bathroom bill.

According to ABC News, McCrory has refused to back down in the face of pressure from businesses which have vowed to boycott North Carolina over the law, as well as the federal government which has threatened to withdraw funding from the state.

"It's the federal government being a bully. It's making law," McCrory said on "Fox News Sunday." The Justice Department is "trying to define gender identity, and there is no clear identification or definition of gender identity,” he added.

McCory said that he believes the law stating transgender people must use the bathroom corresponding to their biological gender, rather than the gender with which they identify, is a common sense measure that will help prevent sexual assault.

The gov. said the federal government is attempting to define gender--something that is not their place to do.

"We can definitely define the race of people. It's very hard to define transgender or gender identity," McCrory said, adding that if North Carolina established separate restrooms for black people and white people, then the government would have the right to intervene.

If McCory doesn’t comply with the federal government, North Carolina may risk losing more than $1.4 billion in federal funding, in addition to $800 million in federally backed student loans for students who attend North Carolina public universities.
