House Speaker Paul Ryan has said he will no longer support Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump after a video was released of Trump making lewd comments about women.

Ryan, who appeared extremely hesitant to endorse Trump throughout the presidential race, eventually endorsed him in June. While Ryan has not officially rescinded his endorsement, according to CNN.com, Ryan’s spokeswoman, AshLee Strong, stated, "The speaker is going to spend the next month focused entirely on protecting our congressional majorities.”

"He will spend his entire energy making sure that Hillary Clinton does not get a blank check with a Democrat-controlled Congress," added an individual who was present when Ryan told fellow Republicans he can no longer defend Trump.

The 11-year-old video of Trump making inappropriate and sexually explicit comments about women was released on Friday and has been a focus of the presidential race in the days following its release.

Instead of working to get Trump elected, Ryan will concentrate his efforts on maintaining a strong Republican Congress. He will reportedly campaign in 17 states and 42 cities this month.
