#ShoutYourAbortion Hopes to 'Destigmatize' Abortion

The hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion is trending on Twitter in response to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. CNN reports a woman named Amelia Bonow started the campaign to “destigmatize” abortion on Saturday (Sept. 19).

Bonow wrote that she felt an “inexpressive level of gratitude” after her abortion.

"I am telling you this today because the narrative of those working to defund Planned Parenthood relies on the assumption that abortion is still something to be whispered about. Plenty of people still believe that on some level -- if you are a good woman -- abortion is a choice which should accompanied by some level of sadness, shame, or regret. But you know what? I have a good heart and having an abortion made me happy in a totally unqualified way. Why wouldn't I be happy that I was not forced to become a mother?" Bonow wrote.

Hundreds of other women echoed Bonow’s sentiment, claiming abortion was the best option for themselves and their unborn children.

However, pro-life advocates criticized the hashtag, arguing that #ShoutYourAbortion glorifies the death of a baby.

Twitter user @brittparker88 wrote, “#ShoutYourAbortion disturbs me on so many levels...why feel the need to 'shout' your elected surgery ending a child's life?”

@chelsea_elisa said, “The greatest example of ‘privilege’ is murdering someone else out of convenience and calling it ‘empowering’ #ShoutYourAbortion.”

Conservative blogger Michelle Malkin wrote, “Seriously? #ShoutYourAbortion is trending? Shout this LOUDER: #PPSellsBabyParts.”
