The death toll from massive mudslides in Sri Lanka has risen to over 200, with 96 others reportedly missing.

According to The Weather Channel, in one area of the country, over 18 inches of rain fell in just two days. Close to 100,000 people have been displaced from their homes and rescue crews are working around the clock to reach those who are trapped. Additionally, over 1,500 homes have been destroyed.

The mudslides have caused other dire problems, including the increased risk of mosquito-born disease as well as crocodile attacks.

According to Fox News, Sri Lanka’s navy and air force are working to aid victims of the mudslides. Other countries have also sent aid and pledged support, including the U.S., Japan, Pakistan, China, Australia, and the U.N, according to CBS News.

It is currently the summer monsoon season in Sri Lanka and heavy rains, flooding, and mudslides are common. Mudslides have become more likely due to forests being cleared in order to plant crops such as tea and rubber.

The Weather Channel reports that a year ago, mudslides also wreaked havoc on the island nation, killing more than 100 people.
